WITTSTOCK / DOSSE, BRANDENBURG

Our submission for the Europan 11 international urban design competition was awarded 2nd prize for the sites in Wittstock/Dosse; a small town in rural Brandenburg with a medieval walled core at its heart. On the basis of the competition we carried out a further feasibility study for the City

The town of Wittstock has faced serious economic and social challenges, our project proposes solutions on two scales: firstly, our new spatial strategy for the whole town centre addresses strategic issues of connectivity and identity.  Connections to, and the spatial setting of, the train station are improved as part of the green gurtel around the town. We create a clear spatial-sequence to the town approaches across the old meadows that reinforce the romantic identity old town.

Secondly the old town is reinforced through repairs to the urban fabric.  Our proposed infill concentrates on the human scale and how one should respond to, and build upon, the ideas and identities to be found on the site.   Through the development of an innovative new ‘garden lofts’ housing typology we seek to create new small communities within a pattern of plots based on the old medieval arrangements.
